Press Release

Fifth Annual Environmental Film Festival Announced

The Allegheny Group of the Sierra Club announces the showing of "films that matter," films that help you interpret the changes in the world around you and enjoy the things that are reliably here. Don Gibbon, who has been selecting the films shown at the Festival for the past five years, says "There are some excellent film festivals in Pittsburgh each spring, but in general they are either fairly low key or about excitement and adventure in the outdoors. Those are certainly worthy approaches, but we take a very different tack. We're showing films that explore the earth's difficulties and the human failings behind those difficulties. And we add in the uplift of people who've dealt with those problems successfully."

This year's crop of films include climate change, seeds, song bird migration and some very clever British animation. There's an hour of free films specially for kids. And the big feature is the lovely and fascinating film by Michael Pollan, "The Botany of Desire." The Festival spans two nights (April 14th and 24th) and half of the "Botany of Desire" will be shown on each night.

If this has already gotten too complicated for you, go to www.alleghenysc.org and click on Monthly Meetings for a full listing of names, times of showing and short synopses of the films. For the beautiful Festival poster, click on Poster Download near the top of the Meeting listing.

The Festival is held at the Imagine Environmental Charter School on Henrietta Street just off Braddock Avenue in Regent Square. There will be refreshments and a sale of seedlings for your gardens.
